High vs Low JCrew Spring 2012

Obviously Kelly green is going to be one of the must have colors for Spring. Why? Because if JCrew (a.k.a. JCrack) says so, then you know it's a must have necessity. One of my favorite outfits from their spring show was this cute Kelly green and leopard number.

After seeing the above, I got super excited when I strolled into Old Navy and say this beautiful Kelly green tunic for $30. It's so insanely cute on and made of a soft flowy fabric; perfect for spring and summer. I am invisioning maybe those JCrew leopard shorts with it or white jeans. Gotta have white jeans for spring/summer. It's my uniform; skinny, cropped, boot cut or trouser, I've got them all.

Marathon Motivation

It's that time of year again in Houston and I am running the Aramco Half Marathon this coming Sunday, January 15. It will be my third time to run and I am every bit as excited as I was the first time. The event is so exciting, inspiring and I always finish wth a huge sense of accomplishment.

I had to skip last year's event because I had my little Sloaney Bear in my belly. This year will make 4 years that I started running as a way to burn fat and get my booty in shape. Prior to my first half I was never a runner, but I found myself at an interesting point in my life with time and a body that wasn't the same after baby. So I decided to give running a try and I am addicted.

When I started, I knew if I was really going to go for something big like 13.25 miles I needed the right gear. Here are my must-have tools to becoming an avid runner. I can't stress enough how important these tools are to keeping yourself motivated. So please don't cheat yourself. If you start out with an inexpensive $40 pair of running shoes, some daisy dukes and unrealistic goals you will give it up. Gauranteed. For what it's worth here's what works for me.

Running Shoes

I mean the real deal $100 plus running shoes. I recommend you visit a true running store where someone can analize your gate and foot. A great pair of running shoes are expensive for a reason. Don't think you can save your self $50 or $60 and you won't notice the difference. You will. And you have to get running shoes, not crosstrainers, not aerobic and not tennis shoes. Personally I like the Ascis Gel Nimbus.

Run Wear

Find yourself a comfortable running outfit that won't ride up or rub in certain areas. When you start running long distances you'll notice right away when the tag of your pants or shorts is suddenly irritating the heck out of your skin. You also don't want to be self conscious or tugging at your clothes the entire time you are exercising.

Ladies, find a great running bra. This is one of the number one complaints I hear from friends, "I can't stand to have my boobs bouncing all over the place." I say, double bag the produce. I have been known to wear two running bras if needed. If you are a large breasted woman, you want them pulled in and tight, if not you could end up with back and shoulder pains later.

Shorts or pants, tees or tanks it doesn't really matter just as long as you are comfortable. I have a huge selection of running clothes from Target. I just recently discovered Lululemon and I am a diehard fan. The running crops are phenonminal and worth every penny you'll pay for them. Nothing jiggles when you run and you could bounce a quarter off your bum they fit so go.

Music Motivation

If you want to start running and you don't have some sort of MP3 Player, go buy one now. Music can be extremely motivating on a run. I change up my play list reguraly and always have a variety of songs on hand to keep me moving. It can also help to clear your head of anything that's distracting.

I recently discover this cool site called Rock My Run through Pinterest and I am constantly downloading new music and it's free. Even better.

Technological Support

Both of my next two items came out of necessity when running took over as my main form of exercise. First, the Polar Heart Rate and Calorie Monitor. I needed this when I was running pregnant and had to keep my heart rate below 140. But now I use it all the time to track how many calories I burn. It's fun to see if you are actually working off that bag of Shipley's donut holes you had for breakfast or the fajita dinner the night before.

Next is my new favorite introduced to me by my friends, Amber and Lynn. It's the RunMeter App and it rocks. It's so dang cool even my hubby is hooked. It tracks your distance, pace, maps out your routes and elevations and it's all done via GPS on your phone. So darn cool you should try it. This is helpful when I just want to run and not have to hope in my car and map out my route via my car's odometer. Lame I know, but that's what I had to do before RunMeter.

Be Realistic

Lastly, I add this as a tool because it's so important and probably the most critical piece of advice I can share with you. Have realistic goals. If you are not a runner and want to give it a shot don't expect to head out your first day and crank out 3 miles. You'll only dissapoint yourself. Work your way up to a safe and healthy training schedule. When I first started running after one mile I was spent. I mean beat red in the face, sweating profusely and gasping for air. But hey, I ran a mile and for me that was a good start. Each week I would push myself just a bit to increase my distance, but I did it slowly. When I reached 3 miles I celebrated big time. I think it involved margaritas or some form of alchol.

If you want to strive for something like a 10K or half marathon or even a full marathon give yourself plenty of time to train. For my first half I trained for 10 months. When the time came I was so worried I wasn't going to be ready, but I rocked it ;)

Always listen to your body. There are many days I'll head out for a run and have in my head I am going to run 6 or 7 miles and after 2 or 3 I have to turn home. For whatever reason I just don't have it in me that day and that's okay because you never want to push yourself too far. An injury can set you way back or stop you all together. If my knee is sore or my ankle is tender from a long run I take a few days off and give my body a rest.

I hope this helps some of you with your new years resolutions or motivates you to give running a try. This is what works for me; a mother of two approaching 40. Eeek.

Tripp Trapp Feedback

You may recall my Tripp Trapp highchair post, and as promised here’s my feedback. It totally rocks. Like that detailed review? No but seriously, it’s pretty darn cool.

It's pretty, fits nicely in a corner, adjustable, sturdy and Sloane loves it. My favorite feature, I can slide her right up to the table and she can sit with us to eat. There is an additional tray table you can purchase, which may be handy when she’s really into self feeding and making a mess.

As for the safety concerns of tipping backwards, I don’t see how a child could physically do it. I tried it and physically could not make it happen. It appears those areas have been addressed. My opinion, it’s worth every penny.

Mark my words, I am going to get that same expression when she's a teenager.

It's All Greek to Me

We made these delicious Greek nachos for dinner tonight and they were so yummy! If you have a Mediterranean market by your home where you can get authentic seasoned pita chips and tzatziki sauce; not your local grocery store brand, it makes them that much more mouth watering good.

We also made them with ground lamb not beef. So good!

Tripp Trapp Chair

I am super excited about the new Tripp Trapp high chair I just purchased for baby Sloane. I love the elegant modern style and its versatility; my oldest daughter can use it to. I'll be sure to share with you my personal feedback for those of you who are interested but on the fence. It's definitely pricer then other high chairs but I am banking on its "grow with your child" features for my return on investment.

I have read a few concerns regarding children tipping the chairs backwards, but this video shows a new feature with fixed stabilizing guides on the bottom. I'll be testing this tipping hazard as soon as it arrives.

A Totally Awesome 80s Evening

This past Saturday night I attended an 80s Christmas party for Lights in The Heights. It's an annual holiday event The Heights neighborhood holds every year for families to stroll the streets with holiday cheer and gear.

Every year my friend Nancy holds a costume party to celebrate the event and this year it was Rockin' 80s. At first my husband was going to attend, but at the last minute it ended up being an all valley girl evening and a totally rad one like fur shure!

Here are a few of me and my BFFs dressed in head to toe 80s attire. Would you believe we got 90% of our outfits from Forever 21? It's part of their Heritage 1981 line. This was all before we busted out the Karaoke machine and jammed to Madonna, Wham, Run DMC, Rick Springfield and so many more 80s classics.

I would like to introduce you to Rachel, the pretty blonde working the retro curls ala Kelly Preston. Then on my other side is Laura who brought back her middle school perm and sky high bangs with the lace hair bow. I chose to rock the side pony with neon and lace tights.

I seriously love my lace tights. Despite their hideousness they did a great job camouflaging cellulite. Ha!

Here I am with my 80s button flare and electric blue eye shadow to stroll the streets full of merriment and my reindeer rodie.

I am loving Pinterest. Are you? It's so addicting and I am gathering great inspiration for life, fashion and home. One of my favorite items to pin is nail polishes. I love have people are showing the actual color on their nails while holding the bottle of polish. Why don't nail polish manufacturers do this? It's a great way to show the actual color on nails instead of a computer generated image with poor color translation. Branding managers could learn a thing or two from everyday people.

I was shopping with some friends today and we bumped into this handsome gentleman at West Elm. Do you recognize him? He's none other than Carter Oosterhouse from HGTV. My friend Amber noticed him and I had a mini heart attack when I saw him.

I've had a crush on him for a long time and I really wanted my picture taken with him. I had to do a lap around the store first to get up the nerve. I am so glad I did because he is so nice, such a gentleman and better looking in person than on TV. He's so tall too!

A Tennis Love Match

I recently started tennis lessons in an effort to spend more quality time with the family and add more cardio to shed some baby weight. I’ve never really been much of a tennis enthusiast, but my husband has his entire life and he’s really good.

About a month ago he started teaching our four year old how to play and I figured I better jump on the court too and learn or they’ll leave me behind in the stands.

After a few lessons it turns out I actually like tennis, a lot. So I figured if I was going to really try my hand at the game I needed the proper gear and headed to Tennis Express in Houston. I admit I was a bit intimidated to shop for a racket not really knowing much about the sport, but when I entered the store and saw all the cute and I mean super cute tennis dresses, skirts and accessories, all my inhibitions flew out the door.

What was this? A sport I could enjoy and get to wear super cute clothing too? Why didn’t I discover this years ago. Needless to say, now I am a tennis enthusiast too.

My absolute favorite tennis apparrel was Stella McCartney for Addidas. The Tennis line is so fine.

And then in no particular order, Nike has some nice dresses and skirts as well.

Where does the time go?

Our baby girl Sloane is now 8 weeks old and growning way to fast in my opinion. I feel like I blink and she's already twice the size she was when we brought her home. She has been such a blessing and has fulfilled our lives in ways we never imagined.

She has given us many smiles to cherish and brighten our days.

We've shared a few cries and quiet moments too.

But cuddling takes precedence over everything else.

Needless to say, we love every sqaure inch of her.

Tip Toe Twins

Last week while we were out and about school shopping, we headed to the Premium Outlet Center in Houston. When ever I shop there I always make a stop at the Tory Burch store to see if I can score some cute shoes on a discount. This go around I found a beautiful pair of tan ballet flats with a black patent toe. I snatched them up immediately and was on a shopping high when I left the store.

To make this purchase even better, the next day we were in Gap Kids and I spied a pair of black toe ballet flats for my 4 year old. Of course I could not resist the purchase since they looked just like mine and like my daughter would say we were twinsies!

First Day of School Style

Today was a big day in our house. My daughter started PreK and did an awesome job at drop off. She was very brave, not one bit scared and eager to learn.

but a beautiful Amanda Talley pillow. That's right friends, you heard me; made out of her beautiful printed fabric. The hubby watched the girls today so I could have a productive Sunday afternoon that included visiting a few of my favorite shopping spots.

I was leisurely perusing MAI in Houston when my eyes landed on a beautiful Amanda Talley lumbar pillow. I have read about her new fabric line, but never seen it in person and let's just say I was aw struck. The fabric is so beautiful in person no photo does it justice.

The screen printing is so beautiful and saturated with color it looks like a real painting. Had it not been for the $300 price tag it would have come home with me immediately. Sigh...oh well, it was worth the 5 minute rendezvous we shared in the aisle of MAI.

And Baby Makes Four

Hello friends! Well it was a rough road getting here but we are finally home and I'd like you all to meet our little Sloane Sidney she is the sweetest baby and we all feel so blessed to have her. Big sister is of course crazy excited and super inquisitive.

As I said above, it was a rough road getting to this point because I had to stay a week in the hospital due to C-section complications. Sloane was healthy and strong but I on the other hand had to have a second surgery and two blood transfusions. That's just the tip of iceberg too, but I won't bore you with hospital details.

In other updates, Sloane immediately slept through the night and we are very, very grateful. I am on the mend and love my belly bandit. It’s my new post surgery BFF. My personal review; it's a definite mommy-must-have for C-sections. It actually helps with the incision healing and my doctor recommended it too. As far as firmer tummy results, it has helped with the "jelly belly" feel which I don't have this time around. Don't expect over night results the product does recommend 6 weeks of wear for best results.

And Lastly the hubby really out did himself this time. For the birth of our daughter and our 10 year anniversary he surprised me with this.

Let's just say mommy was very happy ;)

Eviction Day for Baby

Well friends, the time has come for the baby's arrival. Tomorrow early morning I am heading in for a scheduled induction to have our second baby girl. I spent today grooming and organzing to get ready for her arrival.

Fresh cut and blowout. check. My pregnancy hair has been one of my favorite things about being pregnant. My fresh blowout should last me 3 days easy. Check out this great video from Eva Scrivo's Beauty Blog on how to give yourself a professional blowout that will last for days.

Next up, fresh mani/pedi. Check. Gotta have the nails looking good for the big push. Hands are done in Essie Jazz, my favorite neutral nail color and toes in OPI Red.

I also packed my bag today, or I should say repacked. I added some hospital and post pregnancy necessities like my iPad and my Belly Bandit. Gotta get that waist back in shape, can't spare one day ;)

Baby's going home outfit. Check. I would like to show you some absolutely precious "going home outfit" but let's be realistic folks, it's HOT. Like 100 degrees hot here. We are just sticking with something simple, the Favorite Kimono Set from Baby Gap.

I'll post again soon, and I hope to share some fun baby pictures too, but for now I am saying adios amigos and I'll catch ya on the flip side of this pregnancy!

Puttin' The Squeeze On My Post Pregnancy Belly

Have any of you ever tried these?

I've heard mixed reviews about the Belly Bandit and Belly Tauts, but I'm still giving it a try. You wear them for 6 to 8 weeks to help shrink your stomach and make your transition clothes more comfortable. I figured even if it only helps with the inevitable "jelly belly" feel you have after pregnancy it will be worth it.

I'll be sure to give you all a thorough report on the product. Fingers crossed...

Everyone Needs A Little Animal Print

I am so excited to share this picture with everyone. We finally had our antelope runner installed on our wood stairs. The stairs are completely enclosed and access only the second floor which is all kid space. We wanted to add a runner with a fun print, something unexpected since you can't see it from the rest of the house.

I realize an animal print rug is not for everyone and I wasn't even sure it was for me, but then the idea grew on me and heck why not. These stairs have come a long way since we found them in their original state. You can see a before picture and progress pics I posted about here.

My interior designer insists every home needs one animal print somewhere. So here's my somewhere. It's super soft and perfect for sneaking upstairs to check on the kids.

The Name Game

Well friends the time is almost here for my little bundle of joy to arrive. I am trying very hard not to go into labor this weekend since my OB will be out of town, so we are kicking back and laying low.

As for nesting news the baby's room is no where near done, but most importantly we have not selected a name.

We did the same thing with my first daughter; waited until the last minute and decided in the hospital. For me choosing a name is such a huge responsibility. It's the pressure of deciding what another person will be called for the rest of their lives.

You also have to consider any funny nicknames that can be formed as a result of their name or what their initials will spell. I have a huge baby name book that doesn't seem to be any help, just very overwhelming. We've also searched the internet for some baby naming sites, but nothing has been truly helpful.

This one site however was fun, The Baby Name Genie. More entertaining than informative.

We've considered family names too. But nothing really stands out. So here we sit still very undecided and stressed over naming our second child. Any suggestions?

Nesting Nuttiness

Beware friends, my nesting is in full force and nothing is off limits. With work and home renovations (kitchen pics coming soon) swallowing up the majority of this pregnancy, I am cramming nine months of nesting opportunities into one. My poor husband is staring at me like a deer in headlights.

I started with sorting through six crates of baby clothes; four of my own and two from my oldest and dearest friend Laura. I have done more laundry and sterilizing in the past week then I think I've done all year. It's ridiculous the amount of clothes this child has. Here's a peak.

Keep in mind this doesn't include the 50, yes 50, onesies I have stacked in a basket or the 3 baskets of shoes and 40 sleepers/knit pant suits. She even has 4 never worn bathing suits with matching cover ups. And get ready for this; I did not have one shower. Insane right? When people ask me what I need and I say nothing, I seriously mean NOTHING. Oh wait, diapers, yes I need lots of diapers. Ha!

In other nesting news, we are anxiously anticipating the arrival of our new antelope stair runner. It was a bit of a splurge but well worth it. We've all taken our fair share of spills down the stairs so it's long overdue.

And lastly, I recently ordered this Winterthur carpet from the Martha Stewart Home Depot line for the girls rooms. I ordered the Sharky Gray color and the photo below looks much more gray than in person. It's more in the beige family is subtle gray undertones. We are having it custom cut and binded to perfectly fit each room three inches off the wall. Our entire second floor is hardwoods and hopefully this will muffle the sounds that vibrate through the house when anything falls on the floors.

Hi bloggy friends! I am still alive and pregnant; just a very busy bee getting ready for baby. Last night I broke away to attend a fabulous birthday for my new friend Christi Bennet from P is For Party. It was a ladies only affair and let's just say no detail was left unturned. In true Christi fashion it was a beautiful event and I can't wait for her to post the pics on her blog.

In the meantime here is a sneak peak. The theme was cocktails and floral arranging and of course the favors were amazing. All the ladies took home their own floral arrangements created at the party and new floral sheers.

I am not a big chili person but this recipe tasted more like a hearty Italian stew. Serve it with a balsamic tomato salad and you've got a yummy summer dinner.

Happy Mother's Day to you all! I hope your weekend was filled with love and relaxation. We had a great weekend, half was a bit hectic, but the other half was extremely low key.

For mother's day we didn't do much, just a wonderful brunch and a lazy Sunday. I did however receive a very fun present from the family. I must admit the gift was personally requested, but with good intentions in mind. The hubs and my munchkin gave me a new iPad2.

You see I typically don't request presents for such occasions as Valentine’s Day, Mother's Day, birthdays, etc. I always feel so silly asking for anything when it's always the thought that counts. But this go around I have life changing motivations that caused me to be so bold. So, very casually one day I just happened to mention that if my husband was wondering what to get me for mother's day an iPad2 would be greatly appreciated.

Naturally my electronic request received no pushback. Anything, fun, cool and electronic is always a great investment according to my husband. I wonder if an expensive designer handbag would have received the same welcome. I think not.

When I made my bold request I also included a list of Top 10 Reasons I need an iPad2. I use the word need loosely, because do we really need any of the material things we have? No. So here they are…

1. I am about to take maternity leave in 7 weeks and an iPad would be very handy during nursing time.

2. My husband and I can stop fighting over the laptop. Although I presume we’ll probably argue over the iPad too.

3. My four year old has been requesting an iTouch and she is not getting a new iTouch any time soon. Hopefully monitored playtime with the iPad will appease her.

4. We don’t have a TV in our vehicles, so this will provide hours of entertainment for my children during long road trips.

5. It will also come in handy during doctor’s visits and even at restaurants with my daughter. I don’t normally condone computers, TVs or video games during such times, but sometimes you just want them to be still and quiet.

6. When my husband and I travel we can Scype the kids and see their beautiful faces when we get homesick.

7. When my daughter starts pre-K next year she will have computer lab time, including working with ipads. Yes they already have ipads in schools. This will at least give her some advance practice.

8. I can also use the iPad for work! It will come in handy during client meetings.

9. Welcome to the twenty-first century Walton family. We don’t own iPhones or Apple computers. Even the grandparents have iPhones.

10. I am hoping with the convenience of the iPad I will post more to this blog. Lucky you (I say with great sarcasm.)!

P.S. I also got the new orange Smart cover. I really wanted the pink, but I decided it’s probably best to not emasculate my husband masculinity when he’s using it in public. I am such a thoughtful wife.

Ivy League Dreams

I am so taken by this room for a number of reasons. First I envy the smart use of space for both sleeping and study areas. Second, I love the college like feel the dark colors evoke. I am not normally a dark moody green person, but this one I like. And third, this chic design allows an easy transition from preschool to tween age. I could even see this room done in a dark navy, brown or charcoal.

In the past couple of years my work has moved to the direction of general home soft goods. One interior designer who keeps me pretty busy and is wonderful to work with is Jennifer Martinez with Quatro Interiors and she decoratored the home below.

I've seen Jennifer create many beautiful homes and I am excited to say she is helping me with my own. Below are some window shades I made for this gorgeous home in West University. The house is currently for sale if you are interested and you can see more pictures here.

In the living room we made huge london shades out of simple inexpensive burlap for all 5 windows and that included the kitchen.

Notice the beautiful pillows. I did not make these particular pillows, but we do make lots of custom pillows.

In the master bedroom we made simple white linen relaxed roman shades inset with a gray/white trim on the sides.

It's just a sneak peak, but I have more beautiful things in the works.

Kitchen Artwork

I am working on artwork for the kitchen and am pondering a few pieces that have recently caught my eye. The first is this beautiful 40"x40" photography print on Etsy by Carl Christensen.

Who says you can't have a fun photograph in your kitchen. Does kitchen artwork have to be about food? I like the subtle pop of color with the orange and fun casual feel it brings. I want my kitchen to be fun and casual.

I also like this one for all the same reasons, fun, casual, muted colors.

Next up is this bleach wood starburst mirror from Ballard Designs. I really like the muted color of the wood, but I also feel like I need to take a twelve step program and move away from the starburst.

Or maybe something weathered and old like this Wisteria window pane.

Renovation Realities: Cabinets Take Shape & Countertops

Lot of fun progress this past week. The cabinet builder started framing everything out and we picked the stone countertops. The outer countertops that line the walls will get a honed carrera marble and the island will be soapstone. The backsplash will also be a honed carrara subway tile.

I always wanted a honed marble for the counters, nonnegotiable, but to have soapstone too! It’s a dream come true. I never thought my husband would agree to both as they are on the high maintenance side.

When we picked the stones I gave him three options of my favorites and didn’t tell him which was which. His options were, slate, soapstone and honed granite. Lucky me he picked soapstone!

I am super excited to share the progress over the next couple of weeks. We’ll be picking paint, lighting, seating options and heading towards the finish line.

Roller Skating Birthday Party Success!

My daughter's roller skating and ice cream social birthday party was this past weekend and thankfully it was a success. I wish I took more pictures of the details, but time slipped away.

My goal was to try and hide a bit of the gaudy roller skating decor that is standard with all roller rinks and keep it sweet, girly and pretty. All of this on a budget and time crunch. There were several bumps in the road (for example, favors didn't arrive in time and no time to sew pretty fabric details), but all-in-all I couldn't have been more please. And most importantly, my daughter had a blast.

Below are the details on where I found the decorations and made it all happen fast and cheap.

I covered the horrific plastic tablecloths the roller rink supplied with brown bulletin board paper I found at a teacher supply store. The paper is very thick and rolls out smoothly with no wrinkles. A big roll was $15 and was more than enough to cover three large cafeteria style tables.

The place settings were just standard party supplies paper plates, but I hand rolled the plastic wear the night before to save time setting up. The edible waffle bowls were from Walmart (and I tried several grocery stores and Walmart was the only one who had them) 10 for $2. The old fashion paper ice cream parlor hats were from Praire Moon Beverage Shop and they were the only pre-order thing that arrived on time.

To keep the details simple, easy and give the decor a cohesive design I wrapped the water bottles, whip cream cans and made the table signs all from a book of scrapbook paper I had on hand. I found all the scrapbook paper and the ceramic white square table stands at Michaels craft store.

And my silver lining in all the chaos were the ice cream straw cups I found last minute at Arnie's Party Supply in Houston. It was total luck that I found them the day before and so many for so cheap since my original favors were held hostage by UPS.

I have to give a huge THANK YOU to my friends Danielle and Rachel. They both with their families helped me pull it all together and setup in lighting speed before the party began. Thank you ladies for all the help, you helped keep me sane so I could actually enjoy the special day.

Renovation Realities: Progress Puts A Smile On My Face

Demo began on the kitchen this week and not a moment too soon as I am now 20 weeks prego. Let's get this baby started before the real baby arrives.

I just ordered this blue beauty to keep me organized in 2011. I’ve been a long time fan of Graphic Image datebooks and I order a new one ever year. You could say I am a bit old school with my schedule. I don't sync my Blackberry to load my weekly agendas or schedule reminders to keep me on time. I like the feel of soft leather and smooth pages between my fingers to stay punctual and organized.

Here’s a tip, I always wait until February to order. Graphic Image typically puts their books half off after January.

Locks of Love

My daughter was blessed with a full head of hair from the first day of life. She never lost a hair or rubbed a bald spot and so her hair grew and grew and grew. We've had several haircuts and this last time we decided together, yes Jacquelyn and mommy, to grow it out for Locks of Love.

When I explained to her that growing her hair long and donating it to Locks of Love meant a special child who was sick would get her beautiful hair for a wig, she was on board 100%. Finally the day came after what seemed like months waiting for those last few inches to grow.

I am very appreciative for the acknowledgement, and so to graciously accept this award here are 7 things you don't know about me and just a few of my own Stylish Blog nominees.

1. I love any and all Greek and Mediterranean food. Seriously get out of my way because I plan to chow down. When my husband and I were planning our honeymoon, we went to Greece so he could visit the beautiful country and I could eat!

2. I wanted for the better part of my life to be an actress. I love the performing arts and started my major in college in drama. But… I quickly realized I had no talent and made it my minor. So much for Hollywood!

3. My very first job ever was working in a movie theater selling tickets and working the concession stand. I bet #2 had a little something to do with this job choice.

4. I have a younger sister Denise and I swear we sound exactly alike. My mother can never tell us apart on the phone and when my sister leaves me messages it's scary how we even talk the same. When I listen to my own recorded voice it's even hard for me to tell us apart.

5. I am terrified and deathly afraid of roaches. Seriously, these bugs scare and disgust me and I will abandon my children and family if one is in a room. I am on a first name basis with my Terminex man. Note no photo credit for these disgusting bugs.

6. I am 100% Hispanic and barely speak enough Spanish to get by if I were lost in Spain. Shameful I know, especially since both my parents are fluent. But hey, I can roll my R's just like Sophia Vergara.

7. I have never (knock on wood) broken a bone or had to have stitches. Crazy right? 36 years old and somehow I have managed to avoid these two things. I hope I never have to experience them either.

Renovation Realities: My Faucet Infatuation

A long time ago, before we ever purchased our current home, I fell in love with this kitchen sink faucet from Perrin and Rowe by Rohl. I promised myself that when I got the chance to gut a kitchen I would put this beauty as the eye candy of the sink.

Well friends the time has come and yes, we ordered this faucet in polished nickel and yes it is everything I had hoped it would be and then some. It's so beautiful and shiny and I could stare at it for hours.

We also ordered these little babies for the kitchen cabinets in polished nickel from Restoration Hardware.

Skate Party Update

Busy Busy is the name of the game in our house. Today here's an update on Jacquelyn's roller skating birthday party. You can see the original post here. In the interest of time and money I decided to use some supplies I already had on hand, for example fabrics for the tablescapes.

Here's what we have so far.

Table runner fabric is Watermelon Stripe by Michael Miller fabrics and I have yards and yards of it on hand.

I also have this pretty pink and brown dot I'll throw in somewhere probably for the favor table.

I ordered the invitations and coordinating pieces via Tiny Prints. I wanted to have custom ones made, but again, time and money. By the way, do you know how hard it is to find standard roller skating invitations that aren't super cheesy?

Renovation Realities: My Life Right Now

Project Bump is well underway in our home. Currently the entire second floor looks like a painting nightmare and a Dexter kill scene. In case you are new to this blog, our house is 50 years old. I know that's not ancient compared to some homes, but 50 years has made its mark and the second floor needed a major drywall overhaul.

There were cracks, drywall tape wrinkles and studs poking out in everywhere. Not to mention we just had new recessed lighting added to every room. When I say the previous owners did nothing to update this home, I mean nothing.

The second floor will basically be our retreat when we gut the kitchen in a few weeks. To get the space ready for baby and our new family room headquarters, it was time to bite the bullet and get it done.
Every wall and ceiling is getting all new mud and texture to completely smooth everything out and repaint. It's a mess right now, but when it's all done, it will look like beautiful new construction sheetrock. That makes me very happy.

Amateur Appliqué

Like most people I am obsessed with Leontine Linens custom monogrammed appliqué bedding and towels. I have one big hang up; I can’t see spending hundreds of dollars on custom linens when I have all the professional equipment at home to create the same look.

Since I have two girl rooms to plan for, I’ve decided to try and master the large appliqué monogram. I have appliquéd before, but never on such a large scale. My plan is to appliqué the baby’s bumpers and a valance in my older daughter's room.

We’ll see how it goes and I’ll keep you posted on my progress.

Resolutions Are a Funny Thing

Inevitably a new year comes around and everyone resolves to make positive changes in their lives. Some are simple and realistic others ridiculous and completely unattainable. Nonetheless, the majority proclaim some sort of personal achievement for the New Year.

A few years ago I decided to make realistic goals for myself and spare myself the disappointment of not following through. Here’s a list of my 2011 New Year goals.

1. Start sewing beautiful linens for my own home. Believe it or not I am the shoemaker with no shoes. I spend the majority of my time sewing gorgeous drapery and linens for my customers and as a result my windows are poorly dressed.

2. Have a HUGE tag sale that we have been putting off for about a year. I prefer to call them tag sales because garage sales sound so junky in my opinion. Over the past couple of years we’ve purged and updated our home and as a result we have piles of home accessories and furniture to sell. I have done my fair share of donating to the Salvation Army, but this go around it’s too much to haul so tag sale it is.

3. Renovate my kitchen top to bottom. That’s right we are ripping her down to the studs and bringing her into this new millennium decade. Goodbye 1959, hello 2011.

4. Completely redecorate my daughter’s room and give her a proper big girl room.

These last two are the most precious resolutions to me.

5. Spend more quality time with my daughter and carve out special mommy and me moments as often as possible.

6. Have a healthy pregnancy and deliver this baby girl in my tummy that’s been growing for the past 14 weeks. Yep, I am prego and life is about to get a lot more hectic for my family. We are very excited and feel very blessed.

Happy New Year to all and best of luck with your resolution list. My one piece of advice, keep it simple and achievable.

Lacy Oatmeal Cookies

Today was a great day! The family and I were very lazy and milked every second of that extra hour of sleep we gained last night. We watched TV, played outside and I baked these delicious sweets. My friend had them at her daughter's birthday party and I couldn't resist making them myself. I found the recipe here.

Lacy Oatmeal Cookies

• 1 cup quick cooking oats

• 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

• 1 cup white sugar

• 1/2 cup butter, softened

• 1 egg

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• Milk chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 325 and line a baking sheet with parcment paper (these are very sticky cookies). Combine oats, flour, salt and baking powder together in a large bowl. Cream sugar and butter together until smooth then add egg and vanilla. Slowly add the flour mixture. Drop teaspoons about 4 inches apart. Bake for 6-8 minutes. The cookies should be brown on the edges and white in the middle but darken as they cool. Meanwhile, melt chocolate chips over a double broiler and cool slightly. Put in a ziplock back and cut a tiny hole in the corner. Peel cookies of the parcment and decorate with milk chocolate by squeezing the bag when cool.

So do you ever wonder what I am up to when there is dead air on this blog for days on end? Here is just a sampling of a couple of projects.

The extremely talented Megan with Toast and Laurel hired me to sew the drapes for her master bedroom that was desinged by Erica from Urban Grace Design. Here's a peak at her room with the drapes and a gorgeous Madeline Weinrib rug.

Then a few months later Megan sent over one of her clients, Courtney who was having a fall party. Courtney hired me to sew burlap ruffled tablecloths for the festivities and here they are. And you can see more beautiful pictures from their fall party here.

I recently discovered a gorgeous new nail polish shade that has women of all ages asking me, "What is that color you have on your toes?" Jazz by Essie is the perfect shade of nude and taupe with no pink undertones and it's my new favorite color for fall. Next time I get a fresh mani/pedi I'll snap a photo to share.

What a Lovely Lady: After Photos of Our Home Exterior

Here are some updated pictures of our major home elevation renovation. My apologies for the long overdue reveal. The project has actually been complete for a few months.

This home was built in 1959 and while it has great bones, the archicture of the home was seriously lacking. Here are few befores:

As you can see the house looked like it was sinking because it was covered by a brick pony wall and large shrubs.

Behind the brick wall was a garden of weeds and more weeds accented with gravel.

The front door; not very welcoming.

And here is the After! As you can see we knocked down the brick wall and removed all the existing overgrown plants. The outside was completely resided and everything was painted Martin Senour Linen Weave. We also added new cedar wood shutters and metal hardware to the second story windows and painted them Gaunlet Grey by Sherwin Williams.

Pulling down the wall gave us added bonus space for a proper front porch. We had Pennsylvania Bluestone installed to give the porch a solid foundation and expand the overall footprint. The chairs are from Ikea with custom outdoor pillow-makes for a great spot to enjoy a glass of lemonade or an afternoon cocktail.

We completely overhauled the front door by removing the old door and centering the new one with side lights. This made the front porch more symetrical, and with the custom gas lanterns and planters much more inviting. The door is painted Showstopper Red by Sherwin Williams and all though the picture is a little dark, the color is a gorgeous red.

A few other fun details are our new doorbell and mailbox.

A Pretty Place to Sit

Embarrassingly enough, the current state of my daughter's room is mediocre at best. Her poor room has been shuffled around to 4 different homes and as a result it lacks a sense of style. Lucky for her, mommy is very creative and a master at the sewing machine.

In preparation for her Big Girl Room, I've been squirreling away ideas for the big transformation that will hopefully take place next spring. One of the gorgeous pieces I've purchased is a French settee from Craig's List that I plan to paint and reupholster. The piece will sit opposite her four poster bed and serve as a reading spot, and gathering place for her and her friends to spend countless hours bonding.

Here are a few inspiration photos I've collected so far to help me in with my design decision. I can't decide if I want to go bold and trendy or neutral and classic.
